On Your Left: A Review of Falcon and the Winter Soldier

By: Jocelyn Olmos

CAUTION!! MINOR SPOILERS ABOUT THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER!!

The most recent Disney+ Marvel show “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” has all six episodes released and many people are loving and are very excited over the new Captain America. If you’re wondering whether you should watch the show the short answer is yes, but if you’re still not convinced here’s a review that will have you binging the show in no time.

Of course by now you know that the show’s name is “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and it stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson a.k.a The Falcon and Sebastain Stan as Bucky Barnes a.k.a The Winter Soldier. There are also some familiar faces from previous Marvel films such as Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Daniel Brühl as Baron Zemo, Don Cheadle as James Rhodes, and Florence Kasumba as Ayo (a Wankandian warrior). Then there are some important new faces we see such as Erin Kellyman as Karli Morgenthau, Wyatt Russel as John Walker and much more than that, and Carl Lumby as Isaiah Bradley. The setting of the show is a few months after the blip in 2024. Remember the blip is when half of the population of the Universe was snapped away by Thanos and the blip lasted five years, so this show is not within the timeline of our Universe. The show is a Science Fiction, Action-Adventure, Buddy type show. It has lots of action scenes and science talk with funny lines and moments.

The plot of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” is about Sam Wilson who is the Falcon having a heavy title on his shoulders as Captain America. In Avengers: Endgame we see Steve Rodgers giving Sam the Captain America shield. Then in the series, episode 1 we see Sam giving up the shield to go into the museum of Captain America. Already hit with something that many fans would disagree with since the literal original Captain America gave Sam the shield, symbolizing him to be the next Captain America. Moving into episode 2 and Bucky, the best friend of Steve Rodgers finds out that Sam gave the shield and goes to talk to him, furious. Furious because the shield has been given to another person. Another person in order to be the next Captain America. This person being John Walker since he has passed numerous tests that say that he is skilled enough to be the next Captain America. Bucky can’t believe why Sam would turn in the shield when Steve gave it specifically to him. Sam didn’t know that the shield would be given to another person to have the title of Captain America. However, Sam doesn’t really want to talk about it since there is another problem that he is worrying about. There are rebels terrorizing people in Eastern and Central Europe called the Flag Smashers. They keep their identities hidden with a mask with their red handprint logo. We quickly see that the Flag Smashers have special abilities that shock Bucky and Sam. The rest of the series goes into more about the motivation of the Flag Smashers, who this new Captain America is, and who should really have charge of the shield.

There are certain features about the show that really impacted the way I watched them. One feature of the show that I found to be very clever were the shots of Bucky talking to his therapist about his old days of being “The Winter Soldier”, which was an assassin brainwashed into Bucky by Hydra. Now in episode one of the series we see Bucky talking to his therapists and while they are talking some shots are very close to them. To where we can only see their eyes, nose, and mouth. While I was watching this I felt kinda uncomfortable. I wished that the shot wasn’t so close and I could see more of their faces. But I think this adds more effect to what Bucky is feeling at this moment. He is uncomfortable with having to talk about this killer in himself that he has no control over. I actually adored this moment and these shots once I found this out because it shows how close to detail a show or movie is to the point where it can make you feel exactly what the characters are feeling.

A second feature that I keep thinking about is about the character Baron Zemo. In the show he only referred to as Zemo so that’s how I will refer to him here, but Zemo is a bit of a two-faced character to me. In the past Marvel movies he has caused lots of hovic between the Avengers. He is the reason why they fight each other in Captain America: Civil War. But in this show Zemo seems to want to help. But then he does questionable things here and there that make you question if you should trust him. For example, in episode 4 Sam, Bucky, and Zemo are trying to figure out important information. When Zemo is finally able to get the information he tells the person that gave him the info “Do you see the men there? They’re very bad. Not to be trusted.” He was talking about Bucky and Sam and saying that the information that was given to him was going to be a secret. But once Bucky, Sam, and Zemo are back in their hideout he tells them the information. Then you second guess if he’s lying or not and you just can’t seem to trust him. Maybe it was just me not wanting to put all my trust into someone who was literally the cause of why the Avengers broke up in Captain America: Civil War but it still seems sketchy to me and to my sister as well who watched the series with me.

With the plot and these two features of the series and so much more that I couldn’t talk about here the show is so worth watching. It kept me waiting each week for the new episode and I didn’t want it to end. The actors do such an amazing job in this series and make the characters feel so real. The quality of the entire show is amazing from the incredibly detailed shots, to the sets, costumes, and props. The ending is also one of the best endings I have ever watched in a series where you have such an “hoorah” moment. “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” is out on Disney+ and will not disappoint, so go watch it!
