Choir is a class and club here at Eisenhower High School. However, it’s not just like any singing choir it’s a show choir. Show choirs are different from regular choirs because they involve dancing on a show rather than just singing. There are a total of 3 different choirs at Ike. There is Ikecapella which involves singing and some dance moves but nothing too complicated. Then there is Ikettes, an all girls group that has singing, dance moves, and themes. Lastly there’s Ike Singers, this is the boys and girls choir that also has singing, dancing, and themes.
The purpose of choir is different for everyone. But one of the main purposes said by Mrs. Chamberlain is, “The purpose of choir is to expose students to different genres of choral music where students express themselves through singing.” She also says that it allows students to unite in harmony and emotion. It’s also an incredibly fun club to be a part of. Mrs. Chamberlain and the students in Ike choirs work very hard towards choral excellence and entertain their audience. Choir has been a part of Eisenhower High School since 1959, since the school began.
If you’re wondering if you can join choir the short answer is yes you can. Mrs. Chamberlain says, “Anyone and everyone can join the choir. We really just want all students to learn to love music and to express themselves in a meaningful way.” Mrs. Chamberlain recommends choir to everyone because of how much joy it has brought her.
Choir is both a class and club. Beginning choirs (Ikeapella) meet during their class period. Both the advanced choirs meet both during class time and after school hours. They meet in T-19. Ikettes meet on Mondays from 4:45 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. and on Tuesday mornings from 7 a.m. - 9 a.m. Ike Singers meet on Monday and Fridays for 1 hour after school and Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. The after school hours help tremendously when preparing for performances and competitions.
Yes, the Ike choirs do perform and compete. They have performed in community events, churches, and rotary clubs before to spread their joy and love for music. They also compete with other schools in the state during spring competitions. Lastly here are some words from Mrs. Chamberlain, about the value of choir, “I think the students in choir value our choir family. We love one another and are there for each other and that feeling is precious to us all. Students also value performing and what it feels like to be out on that stage. It’s a huge rush and again lots of fun!”
Students can sign up to be in Ikecappela by talking to Mrs. Chamberlain in classroom T-19 (on the side of the theater near the locker rooms). If you want to sign up for the more advanced groups like Ikettes and Ike Singers you and Mrs. Chamberlain can schedule and audition. Also, here is the choir website for anyone who is interested! It was made by the historian Ike Singers and helped out by the historian of Ikettes.
