Spotlight on: Eisenhower Sobobans

By: Emily Ibarra Velasco

Sobobans, administered by Ms. Solache, Smalls, Mills, and Tamboan is a club directed for brilliant young women who have been selected from invitation and maintained a cumulative 3.8 GPA or higher up to, and continuing throughout their junior or senior years of high school. The club focuses greatly on community service, mentorship, and connection within the group to create a great support system. The activities included in the club help students bond with one another who may have similar experiences or questions! Members of the club, Leyla Orozco and Estrella Rodriguez both stated, “I like this club because I get to spend time with my friends and do fun activities outside of school.” Some activities that the Sobobans Club does annually include the selling of the world's finest chocolates, making sugar skulls, collecting and decorating for cascarones, blanket making to be brought to patients at Arrowhead Regional Center, hat ceremonies, and much more that are yet to be mentioned.

The Sobobans Club has been around for the longest time on campus, there was not a certain date for when this club was initiated, although Smalls was one of the members participating in the club since the 80s, so the club may have been dated further then! The club got its name from an Indian tribe of women who fostered success in their community, correlating that message into the club.

If you are interested in joining this club in the future or want extra information, come to the theater where Soboban meetings are usually held on the 2nd Thursday of every month, and talk to some of the advisors. Don’t forget to wear pink on those days!
