As the new year has arrived, it’s out with the old and in with the new. When it comes to fashion trends in the 2020’s, people have become more expressive with the way they dress and present themselves. So based on what I’ve noticed in the media and around campus, here are two of my 2024 fashion ins for the new year, and only ins because I think fashion is such a subjective topic that there can never truly be any “outs.”
The first in would of course be dressing for you and only you. This is a topic that is more important than people think because it happens more often than not. People always want to follow and keep up with the latest trends that they don’t even realize they truly don’t like what they’re wearing at all. Many also follow what everyone around them wears, but you’re limiting your creativity when you don’t try to develop your own sense of style! So many of these clothes will end up being unworn and never see the light of day again. Never let anyone dictate how you dress and express yourself if you can help it. Don’t let people and social media convince you that you need to have the newest shoes, or the newest purse. You get to decide what you like best and what suits you because you are your own person.
My second and last in would be building a capsule wardrobe (a collection of basic clothes that allow you to mix and match with almost anything). If you’re like me and sometimes struggle with deciding what to wear in the morning, having a capsule wardrobe would make mornings where you’re running late so much easier. Having pieces of clothing that are not solely from microtrends allow you to get more wear and save so much more money in the long run. This just includes having basic pieces, like a blank solid-colored t-shirt. Building a timeless wardrobe doesn’t necessarily mean you need to have a boring and bland wardrobe, it just means you will be guaranteed to always have something to wear! You don’t need to buy the most expensive pieces of clothing when it comes to a timeless wardrobe either.
