The purpose of journalism is to distribute information and report on events that have recently taken place. IKE’s journalism club is here to provide valuable information about school events, worldwide news, or anything that staff or students are interested in. Mr. Davis is the advisor for journalism, as well as speech and debate. Our officers are President Lizzet Jaimes, Vice President and Editor Ray Martinez, Secretary Brooklyn Mondragon, Treasurer Dereck Acevedo, and Historian Yuriana Ramos. Every journalism staff member aims to ensure that everyone has something to read in our school newspaper, which is why we’re always accepting suggestions for articles, giving students a voice and the opportunity to say what needs to be said.
Jackoby James, a new member of journalism, says, “I'm hoping students at Ike find reliable articles.” Vice President and Editor Ray Martinez shares that one of the former students was his biggest inspiration for journalism: “Many graduated seniors of 2024 inspired me to stay in journalism last year, such as De’Kree Antone, the former president.” Mr. Davis, the creator of journalism at IKE, has his own perspective: “I started as a journalist in college at CSUSB. I wrote a few articles for the college newspaper and for about five years was also the host of a radio talk show on the world and culture of video games. I also did some time doing a podcast. One year, while teaching summer school, a student named Yanira, who was taking my English 11 semester 2 journalism class, asked me why we did not have a student paper. I explained to her that at the time, students were not interested in writing articles for the paper, and we had not had one for several years, if not a decade. Every day for the rest of the summer, she had more and more questions about journalism and would ask daily if we could start a paper. My response was the same each day: I would answer her questions and tell her to come talk to me during the school year, and we would see what we could do. Honestly, I thought she would never come to talk to me.”
Homecoming, pep rallies, prom, and sports games are all major events we strive to report on. A staff member is always sent to cover these big events for free so that an article can be written about them. Journalism helps improve writing, reporting, and communication skills.
All articles are posted on the Golden Gazette, Eisenhower’s school newspaper, which receives views worldwide. Journalism meetings are held every Thursday after school in B-8. Join journalism if you’re interested in having a voice to write articles about your own interests or recent news.
