As many of you know, the most amazing time of the year is came at us at lightning speed. All the Christmas excitement is great in all, but we should keep in mind the others that don't have the same traditions as the majority in this country. If we become enlightened about other cultures, that’s when we can respect and understand people a little better.
All around the world, different cultures celebrate things that are interconnected with their beliefs and history. For example, Diwali; “ is a festival of new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil, and light over darkness”, (bb.co.uk). This festival is generally celebrated by the Hindu culture. And is full of light and bright colors. Another beautiful holiday is Kwanzaa. This Festival/holiday was introduced by a man named Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966. Kwanzaa is not considered an “ African” Christmas or anything along those lines. It is an Afro-American holiday that helps unite a family and sustain principles while keeping pride in their ancestors' country. And last but certainly not least is Hanukkah or also known as Chanukah. I'm sure many of you know or have heard of this holiday, but still, something that we should know. on history.com it says that Hanukkah is to celebrate the second temple in Jerusalem and the second century B.C. This Festival is to be reminded of the dedication of the Jews that stood against the Greek / Syrian oppressors. Fun fact Hanukkah translates to “dedication”, which makes sense.
As you can tell, I only summarized three of the hundreds of thousands of festivals and holidays on this planet. I hope that you can understand a little bit more about other people's traditions and cultures. You will become more considerate of others and respect them more as you broaden your knowledge of other peoples traditions.
