Memorial Day is here and don't tell me you aren't excited for your day to start to bring out that grill and have yourself a nice barbeque/carne asada or maybe you can't wait to go and get your memorial day specials !! Now isn't that something if only that was the reason why memorial day even existed. Memorial day is actually a day to Honor those men and women who died serving the U.S. Military.
Memorial day was originally known as Decoration day. On May 5th 1868 at least 3 years after the Civil War a group of Union veterans known as the Grand Army of the Republic declared May 30th to be Decoration Day. It was not until General John A. Logan made a proclamation of Memorial day that it was officially established on May 30th 1868 and it was only honoring the men who died in the civil war. Even though Memorial day wasn't an official federal holiday until 1971.
Memorial Day was commonly known to be celebrated by southerners and northerns mainly women who lost their loves and while they grieve they also decorated their graves which is still very popular today. On the first celebrated Decoration Day while General James Garifield making his speech to the public over 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,00 Civil War soldiers that had passed. Some people use this day to remember their losses and give thanks to those who have died for our flag some have parades, some wear a red poppy to remember those who have passed, others give a moment of silence at exactly 3pm, and there's even people who reenact those who passed in the past wars. Now when you bring out your grill or go get those nice sales remember that today we remember those who fought for this land that we roam around freely in was for us to be brave.
