Presidents Day. A Look at Unsung Presidents

Many people in today’s age think of George Washington, Barack Obama, or Abraham Lincoln when they think of “Presidents day.” Sure, these people did life-changing things when it comes to how our country is run. But, there are many other presidents that have done amazing things that might be respectful to acknowledge during this established day.

To start is Ulysses. S. Grant(our 18th president). Ulysses wasn’t your everyday president. War hero, General, politician, is everything that he has accomplished before his presidency. After being sworn into office he was faced with mending the scars of this nation from the aftermath of the civil war between the confederates and the union. Ultimately he succeeded during his term among his other great deeds.

James K. Polk. I know… “who? I’ve never heard of him?”, well that’s completely okay. President Polk was the 11th president of the United States. He did everything that he promised that he pledged to do during his campaign. Polk purchased the Oregon Territory, The Californian, and New Mexico territories which helped expand our country. Truly a man of his word which is hard to do with that much power; he even lowered taxes!

If you never heard of President Polk, you definitely have never heard of Chester A. Arthur. Am I right? Well, to start he was the 21st president, and he did pretty great stuff and he deserves some spotlight. To summarize, he revolutionized the process of civil service jobs by signing the service Act of 1883. In also modernizing the US Navy to what it is today, following up with many more acts of leadership.

Of course, every president has their faults, and we all have our opinions but for at least one day embrace the past presidents and their accomplishments that had formed the nation that we live in today.
