The purpose of Speech and Debate is to allow students to comfortably express themselves and to speak to one another about current events. This club/Team is great for students to meet other students and see their way of thinking without being judged. The club’s main goal is for students to be able to have a strong argument and defend it. They do this even though the other person may have a different argument.

The club advisors of this club are Ms. Turcios and Mr. Davis. Mr. Turcios says that she was in speech and debate for 4 years at “the other school”. She says that it was an unforgettable and positive experience for her and it helped her with public speaking.

This club/team has been on campus for 7 years now and students can join this club/Team by going to Ms. Turcios or Mr. Davis and letting them know your interests in the club. You will receive a permission slip to have your parent/guardian sign so you can discuss certain topics. Anyone who has interest in the club and an open mind can join. Ms. Turcios says that this club/Team is great if you are afraid of public speaking. It’s amazing if you want to see more current topics going on in the world and different perspectives on them. It also looks great on college applications. The club/Team meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:40 p.m. - 5:40p.m. and members must attend two out of three in classrooms D-5 or M-9.

This club/Team benefits the students part of it by working together and freely expressing their opinions and claims. One thing that Ms. Turcios values about speech and debate are the relationships being built in the team and the debate skills that develop in the students. Lastly if you have any questions feel free to go to Mr. Davis or Ms. Turcios.

That’s speech and debate for you. An incredible club with incredible support. Check it out if you are interested.
