Should The Electoral College be Eliminated ???

The topic of whether the electoral college should be removed has always been debated and controversial, many believe it should be removed while others believe it should be kept. Let me first start off by explaining what the electoral college is, the electoral college is a group of 538 persons who vote and elect who the new president and vice president is going to be. Each state has a certain number of electors, depending on how many representatives each state has in congress. The electoral college was established by the writers of the US constitution. There is also the popular vote, which is the total votes of all registered voters in the country.

Many presidential candidates have won the popular vote, but lost the electoral vote or vice versa. Current president Donald Trump, in 2016 won the electoral vote but lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton. In 1888, president Grover Cleveland won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote to Benjamin Harrison. The reason why the topic of whether the electoral college has always been controversial is because many people view the electoral college as undemocratic, the electoral college does not reflect democracy. In a democracy, the people directly elect the president through voting, but that is not how it's done in America’s democratic government.

The electoral college only elects the president of what 538 persons want, not the majority of the country. Many people believe that the president should be elected through the popular vote, because that way people’s voices are heard and the people of the country are able to choose who they want as president. Many well known politicians, who belong to the democratic party, believe in the abolishment of the electoral college, such as Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Julian Castro.
