Spotlight: BSU/Black Student Union

By Justin A. Dominguez

BSU is known for containing activities for black students inside of high school. These activities would help black students achieve a higher academic status, or help them unite with people in the same culture as them. Here is a look into everything you need to know about BSU, and BSU inside of Eisenhower High School.

BSU was first established in San Francisco University in 1966, this organization was developed from the Black Campus movement, which was a movement where black students, and some latino students as well protested for a relevant learning experience, for all races on all school grounds. BSU was established with the mission to unify black students on campus grounds by offering a diverse array of culture information. Many students felt as if they found their “Cultural Belonging” inside of BSU. This act helped combat racist discrimination, during 1960 and 1970, and provided students with the education that they deserve on college campuses. Over the years and even these recent years, we've heard about many wrongful murders of black and brown students, most notably George Floyd, who passed away May 25, 2020 due to excessive force, and murdered by Derek Chauvin, a white police officer. This would become an motivation for black college students to continue pushing through racial discrimination. BSU participants began taking a more active role among everybody as a community, speaking out against police brutality. This also helped students join BSU to protest on campus, which led to increased campus diversity of black students and staff as well. BSU also organizes food drives outside of campus to help their community.

Here at Eisenhower High School, I interviewed Mrs. Bailey, who is a BSU advisor here at Ike, she helped provide the information presented in this article. The activities that BSU participates in are many, they consist of Member connections and networking, fundraisers, inviting guest speakers, and round tables. Round tables usually have a speaker, and talk about what being black is, and once a year, go to middle schools to communicate with students about BSU. BSU stands for Black Student Union and their main goal is to build a community, teach members how to surf the education system, and unite in response to the fact that the district can use it to promote more unity in the community. Despite the name, Black Student Union, anyone can join BSU, their doors are open to anyone, any age or any race, however it's primarily for African Americans, yet anyone is welcome to join the family, and give their input on what's being developed in the organization. On his experience in BSU, Eisenhower student Aaron Ellerd stated , “I feel like it's an experience for sure, you get to learn more about your culture and connect with your people and learn about a new culture, especially if you aren't black, it's good to learn about black culture and connect as a community.” Which is something we support here at Eisenhower.

Thank you for reading my article on BSU, if you are interested in this organization and being a part of it, you can talk to Mrs. Bailey. In M-3 or you can email her through the Ike page, She’ll help you join this program, regardless of race, because its doors are open to anybody!
