At Eisenhower High School, Mr. Villaganes, mostly known as Mr. V, stands out not only as a dedicated educator, but also as a mentor who profoundly impacts his students’ lives. A first-generation Filipino-American, he has spent the last nine years teaching 8th & 9th graders within the Rialto School District. His unique background & experiences allow him to connect with students who may feel lost or unrepresented along their educational journey. “It’s rewarding to represent students like that of which I was,” he shares, highlighting his commitment to ensuring every student feels they belong.
Mr. Villaganes earned his teaching credentials from Cal State Fullerton & participated in an exchange program at Princeton University for his undergraduate studies. While he once dreamt of becoming an airline pilot, saying, “My nose was always pressed up against the window at the airport to look at the planes before takeoff,” he realized that the math associated with aviation wasn’t for him. Instead, he found his true calling in education, inspired by his grandmother, a teacher who left a lasting impression on him. “I enjoyed seeing her interact with students – how they loved her,” he recalls, reflecting on the roots of his passion for teaching.
For Mr. V, the most rewarding aspect of his role is the ability to change his students’ lives. He is particularly passionate about mentoring first generation students & those from the LGBTQ community, providing support for those who often feel like they do not belong. He believes in fostering an inclusive environment where all students can thrive. Outside of the classroom, Mr. Villaganes enjoys playing water polo & exploring fancy restaurants on weekends, but his heart remains in education.
If he could change one thing about his teaching experience, it would be to incorporate more technology in the classroom. “I want a bunch more monitors displayed in my classroom,” he states, emphasizing his belief that technology can enhance learning, & also his own love for technology.
As a final piece of advice for his students, Mr. Villaganes encourages them to pursue their passions: “Find something you’re good at, & make money off of it.”
Throughout his dedication to teaching, Mr. Villanganes continues to empower his students at Eisenhower, proving that one teacher can indeed make a difference in the lives of many.
