Summer Recap

By Lizett Jaimes

As fall starts to set in and our past eventful summer starts to cement itself, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the events that will shape the rest of our year and our path forward. Many world-altering occasions happened that we will carry with us from the policies and state of this country to the littlest blimps of trends and how it all blended into each other and caused domino effects that led to where we are now.

In Politics-

Donald Trump’s Assassination Attempt

On July 13th of this year there was an assassination attempt on former president,

Donald Trump. It was during one of his rallies in Pennsylvania while endorsing himself for this upcoming election that an attempt on his life was made. Secret service had failed on this day to properly communicate and plan for this event that caused security issues. Their lack of reach out with the local law enforcement and shortage in equipment led to them not fully securing the perimeter of any threats. Surely enough on the rooftop of a nearby building was a man named ‘Thomas Crooks’ that fired 8 shots from his AR-15 just grazing Donald Trump’s ear. This wound however was not fatal and in fact during the live broadcast of this event Trump seems to “embrace” this moment to send a message to his viewers before leaving the stage to seek medical help. The gunman was shot on scene and the former president made a full recovery.

Biden Steps Down, Kamala Takes His Place

After his first term as president and a long campaign for his second Joe Biden dropped out of the race on July 21st. This took many by shock after his insistence to keep running prior to this. His reasoning for this decision is stated in his address “I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country”. With Joe Biden out of the running this late in the year it had left the democratic  party scrambling for his replacement. His vice president, Kamala Harris, looked promising for stepping up the plate as she was going out doing more solo appearances to make herself known to the voters. Kamala was then officially entered to replace president Biden on the ticket and this made the democratic party prosper. With more polls asking citizen’s opinions it seems that Kamala Harris is more in favor of competing with Trump than Joe Biden was. More and more coverage of Kamala shown in the media was well received by the American people including her choice in vice president, Tim Waltz.

The Presidential Debate

On September 11th Kamala Harris and Donald Trump debated on ABC news for this year's upcoming election. This debate was critical for such a close race where swing voters could mean winning the election entirely. The rules for this debate included: a total of 90 minutes with two breaks, each candidate having 2 minutes to answer questions that were not shared to them prior, microphones to be turned off when it’s not a candidate’s turn to speak, and no notes. In this debate both candidates were asked about the economy, abortion policies, immigration, the environment, the war between Hamas and Israel, and healthcare. During this election Trump tended to head off subject and need to be fact checked in his response about abortions being done after the baby is born which is not true, a town in Springfield where according to him as seen on tv immigrants eating pets which was never reported in the city, said by the city manager, or going on a tangent about rally sizes. Harris on the other hand stuck to seemingly vague policies to not only cater to the democratic party but more conservative voters on issues such as allowing fracking to keep going on and a stronger border control. Though she did on her plans to reinstate Roe V. Wade and keep medication prices lower for the people. Donald Trump however stated the fact that he didn’t take down Obamacare because to him it worked until a better one came around. When the interviewer asked him about his own plans that could be better is when we got a popular quote from him “I have concepts of a plan”.  Most after the debate agreed that Harris had some good points in there while most of Trump's praise came from his dedicated voters. Due to this debate however made the race even closer, and it’s a coin toss to who this will go to.

In Pop Culture-

Brat Summer

One of the biggest trends this summer was Charli XCX’s latest album released on June 7th. This album brought Charli XCX back into the mainstream with 15 hyperpop tracks. On this album she explores multiple themes like party culture, dealing with jealousy, love tracks, and authentic relationships. This album is supposed to feel real and

vulnerable while also relating to people and making them want to dance along. She has found herself incredibly successful with her project with many songs going virtual such as “apple”. One of the most famous dance trends of this summer was made to “apple” with hundreds of thousands of people participating. Another groundbreaking moment in pop culture was accomplished by Charli with the “Girl, so confusing” remix with Lorde. In the early 2010’s these two artists were heavily compared to each other and that led to some drama between the two that their fans know all too well of, and on this track they worked out any issues clearing the air. The Brat album will be forever iconic to the music industry with many already deeming this summer as “Brat summer” to express how much this record has changed the industry.

Short n’ Sweet

Short n’ Sweet in Sabrina Carpenter’s 6th studio album and was released this summer. This album was long anticipated by fans of her hit singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” that both placed number one on the charts. This record has 12 tracks of the epitome of pop music that her fans were drawn to. Along with her release of Short n’ Sweet, Sabrina made her next single “Taste”. This song was rumored to be about

her old relationship with Shawn Mendes and his ex-girlfriend, Camila Cabello. All over this album the singer seems to be spilling her heart out over this dramatic situation and tension with Camila. This drama all revolves around how Shawn Mendes and Camila’s on and off relationship interfered with her and Shawn leaving her to feel lied to and tricked. Regardless of the whole controversy the album holds up to the hype and is a amazing sounding record, definitely perfect for the summer.
