The Black Lives Matter Movement and how you can make history

By: Marisol Contreras

Hello Eagles, in more recent news over the past year there has been a movement called The Black Lives Matter Movement. This movement sparked our society in a great way in terms of bringing us together and protesting for what we demand be changed. Sadly it took George Floyd’s death to do so but we’re here now. Now this movement isn’t new quite frankly past generations of Black Americans have been fighting for their civil rights for decades. Now although our current generation is left to deal with this we’ve inherited our ancestors past actions and it’s time to finally deal with this situation the right way for once. There has been a federal bill proposed by some of the people who have been leading the movement and this bill contains the core values of what the BLM movement has been striving for.

This is the link that really goes into depth about what it proposes and really simplifies it making it easier for anyone to understand.

We can start by informing our parents/guardians on it and if you have parents/guardians that are Spanish speakers and have trouble trying to explain the bill I recommend using a website called “Spanish Dictionary” that’ll make it easier for them to understand. This part is the most important to do, we can start by contacting our representatives in California whether it be through an email or a phone call leading to a voicemail for their office. Then, try expressing why they should be trying to get this bill passed and why it matters to you; now these tend to be the most effective. By sharing the website around like wildfire on social media will help get more eyes on it which is very important so those who support the BLM movement know what’s going on. Although, even if this federal bill doesn’t get passed I think it could become similar to the bill of rights where we add on to it and make it become something greater just like how the bill of rights became the constitution.

Lastly, Eagles this is the time to uplift each other and really make a difference and finally reassure that each and every person who was affected get better treatment from our society whether it be the smallest altercation or microaggression that they experience we need to step in and use our privilege and do better; that's all I have to say have a wonderful day and don’t be afraid to take initiative.

If you’re going to participate in a protest know your rights, remember to wear a face mask, and hydrate:

If you’re looking for more resources on how you can help the BLM movement here are some:

Also if you’re looking to donate don’t donate to change.org the profits go to their website rather than the person listed there for the petition. Donate directly to their go fundmes, cash app, or venmo listed there for the people affected by police brutality and can’t afford to pay for funeral costs or jail bonds for those who were peacefully protesting.
