Artificial Intelligence has quickly developed over the past few decades, becoming a core part of most people's daily lives and transforming various key parts of our society and culture. As advancements in Artificial Intelligence, also called A.I., continue to speed up, their impact is seen across industries such as healthcare, finance, entertainment, and education. There is no doubt about the strides that A.I. technology has made and their great effects on society and culture.
The field of A.I. has gone through remarkable progress with its learning algorithms, ability to let computers analyze large amounts of data, and make decisions with great accuracy. A.I.’s ability to gather information from a large set of data (deep learning) has caused breakthroughs in image and speech recognition, which is used in many everyday technologies to accomplish tasks without needing a human's instructions. With deep learning A.I. really takes a look at all the circumstances of bias and the weight of data to recognize certain parts of a data set. Deep learning is so well integrated into the real world that most people can look right past what it has done to everyday services.
A.I. is changing industries by automating repetitive tasks to enhance efficiency, and gathering data to improve where industries are lacking. In healthcare, AI is used to digitize medical records so that professionals can access them quicker, as well as spending time to better analyze the information. A.I. is also used for personalized treatment plans for patients' specific diagnosis in a way that hasn’t been done before. In finance, AI algorithms analyze data to predict market trends, manage investments, and improve fraud detection. The transportation industry is also embracing what AI can do for it by ensuring people have safer trips with live updates about any hazards and the conditions of the road. These changes in society not only increase productivity but also change the way professionals approach their work.
While A.I. has created many new opportunities there have been concerns shared regarding its impact on employment. As of now there is no definitive answer as to how AI being integrated into the workplace has affected workers. There have been acts to protect these workers, however, such as the SAFE innovation framework from job loss. In middle wage jobs there has been a lot of change in how A.I. takes over the workers responsibility of regular routine tasks, however, A.I. also has generated new demand for roles in A.I. development, maintenance, and its ethical oversight.
A..I is shaping cultural experiences, from how we intake media to how we interact with each other. Due to A.I. powered algorithms, we as the people are introduced to a wider set of media. This in and of itself has the power to diversify one's view point and to create a bigger sense of community, but it also brings up the problem of bias. There have been concerns brought up about how A.I. has the capability to show preference as well as stereotypes to control the public's opinion. The use of AI has been constantly pushed to different mediums such as art, music, and writing. With the way AI works we can even consider what A.I. can do creatively, considering how it takes from others' work to create “art”. It's important to keep in mind what A.I. has helped society improve on, but also to be open to how such technology can hurt creativity in our culture.
Advances in A.I. are guiding society into a new age of innovation, efficiency, and cultural transformation. While the impact of A.I. on employment and the ethical concerns must be addressed, the benefits could be great. As we navigate this ever changing landscape it is important to encourage and promote responsible development to make sure that A.I. serves humanity in a way that improves the quality of life. As A.I. continues to progress its role in shaping our future, it will without a doubt be significant.
