Over the past week, the photo of Bernie Sanders sitting at the presidential inauguration, while wearing his mittens, has gone viral on social media, but not a lot of people actually know who Bernie Sanders is. Bernard Sanders was born and raised in New York City, New York, he came from a ethnic Jewish family. His family struggled economically while he was growing up, by the age of 20, Sanders had lost both his mother and father. In the 1960’s Bernie Sanders moved to Chicago to attend school at the University of Chicago.
While Sanders was in Chicago, he participated in the Civil Rights movement, he protested against racial inequality and was even arrested while he was protesting. A couple years later, Sanders ended up moving to Vermont and in 1981 he was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont, this is where his political career started. In 1991, Bernie Sanders became a US Representative, and held that position from 1991 until 2007. In 2007, he was elected a United States senator, representing Vermont and has held that position ever since. Bernie Sanders ran in the 2016 Democratic presidential race but lost to Hillary Clinton, he also ran in 2020 but ended up dropping his campaign. Many people support Bernie Sanders, and hoped for him to be president. Bernie Sanders believes in economic equality, climate change, keeping families together, stricter gun control, free healthcare and free tuition to attend university.
