Today, May 3rd, 2021, is World Press Freedom Day and it is celebrated all around the world by journalists, film makers and public media workers. On this day, press freedom is celebrated and recognized and journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty are also honored on this day. On this very special day, I would like to share why journalism is an integral part of our society.
Journalism gives current and important information to the public, it spreads the truth, and awareness. Journalism helps people become educated by spreading information on relevant and important topics. Journalism helps people stay aware and informed of topics that are occurring around the world.
According to the United Nations “journalism is one of the most dangerous professions in the world”. Journalists risk their lives in order for our society to be informed and aware of current issues, many of them have been killed for speaking the truth. In many countries freedom of press does not exist, journalists are censored in these countries and they run a big risk of being killed. Luckily we live in the United States where freedom of press is protected by the first amendment. Happy World Press Freedom Day!
